As finals come to a close and you head home for the holidays, there’s only one thing you’re looking forward to just as much as seeing your family and friends—the food. December is known for its scrumptious treats, but it’s time to step outside of your comfort zone of Christmas cookies and egg nog. Regardless of your religion or background, I definitely recommend that you try some of these Jewish dishes you may never have heard of before.

1. Latkes

Perhaps the most infamous Hanukkah food, latkes are the perfect greasy treat for a chilly winter night. They can be a snack or a whole meal, and they’re made out of God’s gift to the Earth–potatoes. Find the recipe here.

2. Homemade Applesauce

Just as important as the latkes themselves are the dip choices. The major dividing line lies between sour cream and applesauce–the classic savory vs. sweet debate. I’m sure I can convince you applesauce is superior with this homemade recipe.

3. Sufganiyot (Jelly Doughnuts)

Since North Carolina is the birthplace of Krispy Kreme, there’s no doubt that you love doughnuts. How could you not? And there’s no doughnut better than one filled with sweet, tangy, jelly. Check them out here.

4. Tzimmes (Sweet Carrot Side Dish)

If you’re missing your fruits and vegetables during this sugar-coated season, you should check out tzimmes, a medley of stewed carrots, dried fruits, and sweet potatoes. Enjoy this sweet treat that’s actually pretty good for you.

5. Sweet Potato Latkes

The only thing that can make regular latkes even better is the addition of the “gourmet” of the starch world—sweet potatoes.

Try out all the Hanukkah treats for your tastiest holiday season yet!
