What It's All About
Many well-known food brands like Betty Crocker use made up names. Siggi is an Iceland native who believes in simple ingredients; as a cup of Siggi's says, “simple ingredients, not a lot of sugar.” Siggi achieves this by practicing a method called skyr (pronounced skeer), which is a tradition in his homeland. Skyr is a process where skim milk is incubated with live active cultures.
Then, the yogurt is drained (meaning 75% of the water content is removed from the yogurt). This process takes four times the amount of milk than a regular cup of yogurt. This technique gives the yogurt a very thick, creamy texture, leaving the protein content two-three times higher than standard yogurt. Its protein ratio is higher than its sugar ratio, exceeding all the other yogurt brands.
For example, a cup of Strawberry Chobani has 15g of sugar and 12g of protein, while Strawberry Siggi's has 11g of sugar and 16g of protein. Siggi also uses real fruit and no flavoring, which means there are no added sugars such as aspartame, sucralose, and no gelatin. Not only is there no added flavoring, but he doesn’t use artificial coloring, preservatives, or high fructose corn syrup. The yogurt is also non-GMO verified.
Why You Should Care
A yogurt with less sugar is great for your health, and with this brand you know you're only consuming natural sugars. The increased protein means that the yogurt will fill you up more, which is always good news. Siggi's is simple and delicious, they aren't hiding anything from you.
Don't limit yourself to just eating the yogurt, but try incorporating it into your everyday recipes. Try putting it on a slice of toast in the morning, in a fruit smoothie, in your oatmeal, or even on top of your waffles. Many bloggers have also created recipes using Siggi's yogurt.
